Research & DevelopmentKlingon Academy Game Design |
The Klingon Academy (KA) design is primarily based on the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (SFA) design with many modifications. Our design team has taken great pains to thoroughly evaluate the feedback received from SFA and identify its strengths and weaknesses. Tthe overall result will be a look and feel much different than SFA. Basically, Klingon Academy will experience a complete overhaul of Starfleet Academy with an improved graphics engine, additional ship systems, enhanced AI, and more ships with a variety of weapons.
The following section contains descriptions of the vessels used by the various navies in Klingon Academy.
A few general comments can be made about the ships of the Klingon Defense Force. Firstly, They all have a few of the same design elements that make them decidedly Klingon. All have a bulbous command module or "head". Also, all have a long boom or "neck" which attaches the head to the main body. The ships have the greatest concentration of windows/lights/etc. in the bridge area of the head, along the port and starboard sides of the boom, and along the leading face of the main body. They do have them elsewhere, but the highest concentrations are still in those general areas.
| Klingon Battleship "qeylIS betleH" (Honor Sword Of Kahless) Class |
The "qeylIS betleH" Class Battleship is the largest ship currently fielded by the Klingon Defense Force. A massive ship, this vessel has a crew of 1000 warriors. This is a truly powerful vessel capable of destroying most ships in a few salvos.
The overall design is typically Klingon, with a head, neck, and main body configuration. This ship has a very harsh and angular look to it, with no curves anywhere.
The head has twin torpedo tubes on the front, with the typical flat platform with the bridge on top of it. In the center of the front section of the flat platform is an oval shaped bore for the spinally mounted super phaser.
Extending back from the head is the neck. The neck is actually twin booms in an over-and-under configuration, with structural supports between them. The lower boom is the thickest and is the actual neck attaching the head to the main body. The upper boom is the "barrel" of the super phaser cannon, which attaches to the back of the flat portion of the platform. The main boom attaches to the main body with several large supports at the joint. The super phaser barrel runs along the top of the main body, flush with it. It enters the impulse block on the top of the main body.
The main body itself is thin and flat and roughly trapezoidal. The widest base of the trapezoid is where the neck attaches. From either side of the attaching point of the neck, sharp triangular sections jut out like fangs.
On top and at the very aft end of the main body sits the impulse block which on this vessel is fairly large and should have various bits of machinery on the surface with a particular concentration of machinery around where the super phaser barrel attaches. On the stern facing edge of the main body, there is one photon torpedo bay. On the bottom of the main body is something similar to the impulse block, but it has twin fantail doors facing aft. This is the shuttle bay.
From the sides of the main body, two wings extend going slightly upwards then angling down ending in warp nacelles. On either side of the impulse block, twin dorsal wings extend at an outward angle, like the tail fins of an F-14 Tomcat, each topped with a warp nacelle. These dorsal wings are mirrored ventrally, giving the ship a total of six warp nacelles.
The ship is armed with two heavy photon torpedo launchers fore, a forward super phaser, and four forward heavy disruptor cannons. Aft, there is one heavy photon launcher and four heavy disruptor cannons. This ship also mounts eight forward firing disruptors, four port, four starboard, and six aft. Contained in the shuttle bay are six attack shuttles and two attack runabouts. Each is armed. This ship is not cloakable. The power requirements are too great for a ship this size.

The "qeylIS betleH" Class Battleship is the largest ship currently fielded by the Klingon Defense Force. A massive ship, this vessel has a crew of 1000 warriors. This is a truly powerful vessel capable of destroying most ships in a few salvos. The ship is armed with two heavy photon torpedo launchers fore, a forward TOP SECRET WEAPON, and four forward heavy disruptor cannons. Aft, there is one heavy photon launcher and four heavy disruptor cannons. This ship also mounts eight forward firing disruptors, four port, four starboard, and six aft. Contained in the shuttle bay are six attack shuttles and two attack runabouts, each being armed. This ship is not cloakable due to difficulties adjusting a field that size and the power requirements for it.
This ship is the pride of the Klingon Defense Forces, but more than that it is a symbol of the might of the empire. The project, ordered by Chancellor Lorak more than a decade ago, is the grandest undertaking of the Imperial Klinzhai Shipyards of the Mempa system. However, the project itself is steeped in political infighting and maneuvering, typical of Klingon government affairs. Several factions within the council had been quarreling over lucrative naval contracts. To complicate matters even further, questions of honor were also being debated as one side would complain bitterly that if the other faction obtained the honor associated with these contracts it would upset the status quo in the Klingon political power structure. The bickering soon escalated into something tantamount to a blood feud which threatened to divide the council into three separate rival factions. This would have crippled the empire by preventing any side from obtaining the necessary majority for major council decisions.
In a savvy political maneuver, Lorak ordered the design of a new ship, which would be a symbol for all the empire - the fact that it could be used as a tool for inducing political stability was realized only by Lorak. One of the factions, led by Bdas, son of BoS of House Birokken, was responsible for the hull design and engines, while the other, led by Yoktu, son of QI, provided weapons designs and control systems. Four were ordered, one for each "corner" of the empire, and each would serve as flagship for fleet operations in its sector.
Two shipyards were originally slated to produce two vessels each, but the Chenwi Duj Yards was tangled in a scandal of corruption and greed which forced Chancellor Lorak to revoke not only the contract, but the council seat of Yoktu as well. The vessel they were working on is still only partially complete. It is currently being towed to the newly expanded Klinzhai shipyards for completion. The Klinzhai Shipyards has completed two of the vessels and will be fulfilling the remainder of the contract.
The ship was originally designed in 2272 by master ship builder Hogh Batlh. The first ship of the class, the I.K.C. "qeylIS betleH", was launched in 2285 with its sister ship, I.K.C. "yejquv ghop" (Hand of the High Council), launching in 2288. The "qeylIS betleH" is currently the flagship of the Qonos Home Fleet, with the "yejquv ghop" acting as flagship of the Federation Neutral Zone Deep Space Patrol Fleet.

Klingon Dreadnought "pumwI'" (Accuser) Class |
The "pumwI" Class Dreadnought is a large and powerful ship used in fleet engagements and as the leader of large battlegroups. The ship has a crew of 850 warriors.
The head is typical Klingon with two torpedo tubes on the front. The neck is also typical Klingon, but the ship begins to differ greatly from most Klingon vessels where the neck attaches to the main body, which will be discussed later.
The main body is built sort of like a turtle shell. The top is roughly diamond shaped, with a notch cut out on the front. It rises abruptly, then gently tapers at the back when viewed from the side. This is the upper portion of the turtle shell. The underside the same basic shape as the top, but flat and without the notch. Within this shell, wafer like structures of miscellaneous machinery are layered inside and fully visible through the notch on top and from the front. From this mass of machinery protrudes the neck, which attaches to the rest of the ship within the shell section out of view from the outside.
Two sets of wings are attached to the main body from the rear section of the diamond shaped shell. The first set sweeps far forward, coming even with the front of the main body shell. Viewed from the front, these wings droop a bit, similar to the Bird of Prey in attack mode. The second set, above the first, rises to a point even with the top of the neck and then goes down sharply, similar to the Bird Of Preys wings in cruise mode. Each wing ends in a warp nacelle.
On the very back of the top section of the main body shell sits the impulse block. This impulse block is more wedge shaped than those on other ships, which brings the top to a point just a bit below level. A dorsal wing rises from the impulse block, swept back a bit to provide a sleeker profile, atop which rests a fifth warp nacelle. The rear of the ship has one photon torpedo tube.
On the underside of the ship is a pair of doors, slightly recessed. These are the shuttle bay doors. This shuttle bay houses three regular attack shuttles and one attack runabout.
This ship is armed with two heavy photon torpedos forward, with four heavy disruptor cannons, and six disruptors. Port and starboard each have four disruptors. Aft has one heavy photon torpedo launcher, two heavy disruptor cannons and three disruptors. This ship can cloak.

Late in 2272, shortly after the VGer incident, the Tholians unleashed a new class of ship on several Klingon outposts on the Klingo-Tholian border. This large ship was more than a match for the Klingon forces that could be fielded against it at the time. After a period of three months of the enemys unbridled rampaging throughout the border area, a massed attack on the ship finally succeeded in destroying it.
The battle was extraordinarily costly in terms of ships and lives and forced Klingon High Command to rethink its battle strategies. The most apparent change to be made was the acquisition of a large and powerful vessel to provide not only a devastating punch, but to coordinate the disparate forces involved in larger battles. Tactics were developed whereby the large ship would salvo an enemy vessel from long range to get the enemys attention. When the enemy turned to engage the large ship, the smaller vessels would charge in to attack the enemys engines. Once the enemy was immobile, the large ship would then move in for the kill. Shortly thereafter, the Jevghom Design Bureau submitted the designs for a massive vessel which fit this new tactical doctrine perfectly.
Because of the speed and perfection of the Jevghom submission, there were many accusations of collusion or complicity with the Tholians in the border attacks. Many were killed in the subsequent honor duels, and none of the accusations were proven. In response to this hullabaloo, the engineers and designers at Jevghom dubbed the ship "pumwI" or the "Accuser".
The first of these ships was launched in 2282, the I.K.C. "pumwI". The "pumwI" immediately took up station on the Klingo-Tholian border, waiting for the chance to prove itself against the Tholians. The ship had only been on station for two months when it got its chance. A Tholian taskforce had been dispatched on a mission to plunder the Thaleris Asteroid belt of dilithium and other valuable mineral resources. A small mining outpost reported the incursion and the "pumwI" leapt into action. The "pumwI" and her battlegroup decimated the Tholians with only minimal losses. However, victory celebrations were cut short when the "pumwI" was lost with all hands three months later in an ion storm. Currently, there are fifteen of these vessels in active duty with another dozen on order.

Klingon Heavy Battlecruiser "voDleH" (Emperor) Class |
This mean looking vessel is the newest and one of the best ships fielded by the KDF. Mixing daunting firepower with good speed and maneuverability, the presence of these ships usually signifies a costly battle for the opposing side. It has a crew of 475 warriors.
The "voDleH" Class Heavy Battlecruiser possesses the standard design elements of all Klingon vessels. It has a command module head mounted with a heavy photon torpedo launcher with a bridge section mounted atop a flat platform. From there extends a neck which blends into the main body, unlike other vessels in the fleet.
The main body is angled upwards from the neck, levels out for a bit and then tapers off towards the aft. Set into the top of the main body, behind the flat portion of the main body is the impulse block. The main body has two pairs of wings attached to it. The first pair, which are swept forward, are angled down slightly, run out from the ship, then angle sharply back in towards the centerline. The upper pair are angled upwards, but are smaller and set farther back along the main hull. After extending outwards for a distance, they angle sharply back towards the centerline. Each wing is topped with a warp nacelle for a total of four.
The ship is armed with one forward heavy photon torpedo launcher and four forward firing heavy disruptor cannons. Aft it has four heavy disruptor cannon. The ship also has five forward disruptors, three aft, port, and starboard. This ship also carries two attack shuttles in its shuttle bay. A cloaking device is standard.

The most amazing thing about the Emperor class Heavy Battlecruiser is that its design and construction are handled solely by the Wo ChenwIDuj (Imperial Shipyards) in orbit around Qonos opposite the Praxis moon. Master Shipbuilder Jogh Kenka started the project and maintained strict control of it from beginning to end. The designs were completed, simulator tested, and approved all within the span of two months. Then construction of the prototype, I.K.C. "voDleH", proceeded smoothly from that point, finishing ahead of schedule and under budget a year later. After the trial run of the prototype, the High Council was so impressed with the ship and its designers that the next ship construction contract, whatever it may be, has already been granted to Wo ChenwIDuj.
An interesting side note to all of this, Jogh Kenka personally dueled with more than a dozen representatives of various weapons manufacturing and ship building concerns when they attempted to use political influence to interfere with the design and construction of the I.K.C. "voDleH". Kenka won every duel, but lost and eye and three fingers in the process. Kenka is now retired from Wo ChenwIDuj and is working as an advisor to the High Council in naval construction matters.
The I.K.C. "voDleH" was launched in mid 2288, with four more being launched every six months. Currently there are thirteen in service with four more scheduled for completion shortly. The "voDleH" is stationed on the Romulan-Tholian-Klingon border.

Klingon Command Cruiser "SuvwI' Qeh" (Warrior's Anger) Class |
The SuvwI' Qeh class Command Cruiser is loosely based off of the hull of the D7 class Klingon cruiser. It has a crew of 350 warriors, including dedicated "marines". This ship is a vital part of Klingon battle tactics, utilizing a good combination of speed and firepower to lead battle groups.
Like many Klingon vessels, it has a bulbous command module topped with flat platform upon which sits the bridge area. The front of the command module boasts twin photon torpedo tubes. Windows for this section of the ship only appear on the flat platform and the bridge area.
Moving back from the head, we come to the neck or "boom" section of the ship. The neck extends and attaches to the main body of the ship with two structural beams giving extra support to the attaching point. Windows appear on the port and starboard sides of the boom with some frequency, with the occasional window dorsal and ventral.
The main body is trapezoidal with the widest base being slightly curved. The neck attaches to this curved section. The body itself extends into "wings" which are bent forming an obtuse "L" shape with a warp nacelle at the end of the wing. Fore and aft at the apex of the "L" are mounted heavy dirsuptor cannons with one fore and aft pair on the port and the starboard sides. The bow or front section of the main body has windows and lights in significant numbers, again with occasional strays elsewhere.
Atop the main body section is the impulse block, which contains the twin impulse engines. There are no windows on this section of the vessel.
Dead center of the stern face of the main body is another photon torpedo bay. Located ventrally on the main body is a third warp nacelle, recessed into the body. The sides of the shuttle bay each have a bank of fairly large windows and the occasional window or light elsewhere.
The surface of the ship is medium to dark shades of green with slightly raised panels in an interlocking pattern across the upper and lower flat surfaces of the main body. This interlocking pattern is fairly important as it represents the deflector grid of the vessel.
The ship itself is armed with two forward firing photon torpedoes and one aft. It also mounts four heavy disruptor cannons, two fore and two aft. The number of disruptors is the same for this vessel as the Ktinga Class D7 Cruiser, four disruptors forward, two aft, two port, two starboard. This ship is not currently equipped with a cloaking device, although the Klingon Defense Force is refitting them.
History of the Klingon "SuvwI QeH" (Warriors Anger) Class Command Cruiser
The "SuvwI' QeH" class Command Cruiser is loosely based off of the hull of the D7 class Klingon cruiser. It has a crew of 350 warriors, including dedicated "marines". This ship is a vital part of Klingon battle tactics, utilizing a good combination of speed and firepower to lead battle groups. The ship is armed in the forward arc with two forward firing photon torpedoes, two heavy disruptor cannons and four disruptors. Aft has one torpedo launcher and two disruptors. Port and starboard each mount two disruptors. This ship is not currently equipped with a cloaking device, although the KDF is refitting them.
While this class of ship is named "SuvwI QeH" it would be more appropriate to name it the "vav bortaS" or "Fathers Revenge". The head of the wealthy and powerful Gorthas family, Dojkan, financed the conversion of his personal KTinga class D7, the "SuvwI QeH", into the powerful command cruiser used today solely to exact revenge on house Martok for the death of his son.
Dojkans son KrojduH had been attending the Klingon Academy and was nearing graduation when Krang, son of Graltz, brother of Martok caused an accident which killed KrojduH and several other students. During a training cruise on a dilapidated Brel Class Bird-Of-Prey, Chief Engineer Krang while manning the bridge engineering station neglected to inform the cadet captain that an anti-matter flush vent was malfunctioning when the ship entered a nebula. Ionized gas entered into one of the magnetic anti-matter storage bottles through the partially open vent, causing it to explode. A sizeable portion of the engineering section of the ship was destroyed in the explosion, killing KrojduH and many other engineering cadets.
Because Martok was close friends with the Academy Commandant at the time, the accident was blamed on KrojduHs engineering cadets. Dojkan, who had been the Chief Engineer on numerous starships, including Qonos One, before inheriting the leadership of his house, refused to believe that the son he personally taught would make such a mistake. Investing much of House Gorthas resources and calling in many favors, Dojkan finally discovered the truth about the incident. Concurrently, he also discovered that after Krang graduated the academy six months from then, he was to command his fathers personal D7 on a brief shakedown cruise following a maintenance overhaul.
Blinded with rage, Dojkan converted his D7 with vengeance as the primary design influence. Six months later, with Graltz, Martok and several other key members of House Martok aboard, Krang was returning to his home port from the shakedown cruise. Encountering an unfamiliar Klingon vessel, he hailed it, but was greeted by a broadcast of damning testimony from one of the bridge officers of the ill-fated Bird Of Prey. Martok, infuriated, demanded to know who was broadcasting that testimony. Dojkan revealed his identity and challenged House Martok to single ship-to-ship combat immediately. When Martok, realizing the vulnerability of his House, attempted to back down, Krang foolishly accepted the challenge. In a short but bloody battle, the "SuvwI QeH", destroyed the D7 and the bulk of House Martok.
When the results of the battle were discovered it was clearly obvious that the design changes made to the "SuvwI QeH" were a great improvement over the standard D7. The High Council not only recognized that Dojkan was within his rights of revenge but requested the design plans to convert existing D7s to the "SuvwI QeH" variant and to construct new ones. The first official production "SuvwI QeH" was christened the I.K.C. "KrojduH" and was launched in 2287 and was the first equipped with a cloaking device. There are currently thirty "SuvwI QeH" class vessels in service, sixty percent of which are D7 conversions with no cloak.

Klingon Destroyer "QuD" (Insurrection) Class |
A larger variant of the Brel class Bird of Prey, the ship is more of a "stop-gap" ship to fill a tactical void in the Klingon Defense Forces. The ship has better engines and more firepower than the Bird of Prey, yet still has the same problem with not having weapons available in any arc but the forward. This makes the ship tactically weak in large engagements, but well suited to attack stray enemy vessels, or defend convoys against pirates. The ship is cloakable and has a crew of 50 warriors.
The head and neck of the ship are exactly the same as the Brel Bird of Prey. The main body is extended and enlarged. Between the two upper engine pods is mounted a single heavy disruptor cannon in a small pod. Below the wing line are two body extensions which mount two additional regular disruptors. The wings are of the same design as the Bird of Prey, slightly angled and mounting disruptors at the tips.
The ship mounts a single forward torpedo tube, a single forward heavy disruptor cannon, and four regular disruptors.
History of the Klingon "QuD" (Insurrection) Class Destroyer
A larger variant of the Brel class Bird of Prey, the ship is more of a "stop-gap" ship to fill a tactical void in the Klingon Defense Forces. The ship has better engines and more firepower than the Bird of Prey, yet still has the same problem with not having weapons available in any arc but the forward. This makes the ship tactically weak in large engagements, but well suited to attack stray enemy vessels, defend convoys against pirates, or assault large unmoving stations. The ship is cloakable and has a crew of 50 warriors. For weaponry, the ship mounts a single forward torpedo tube, a single forward heavy disruptor cannon, and four regular disruptors.
Originally, the concept for this ship was introduced by the late Colonel GaltNaH, who was one of the more brilliant tactical minds at the Klingon Academy and star pupil of General Koord, in 2280. While programming in simulations of a prolonged war with the Federation, it was discovered that the Klingon Defense Forces suffered from a major tactical gap in their Order of Battle. While the new Brel class Birds of Prey were well suited to the task of scouting and escort duty and the piH class frigates were perfectly suited to picket duty and fast patrol, neither was sufficient for the traditional destroyer roles of long term search and destroy missions and heavy convoy escort. However, the ngeHbej class light cruisers were supremely qualified for the heavy convoy escort and protracted search and destroy missions but were also needed for support roles in larger fleet engagements. After running through the equivalent of the first month of the war, there were not enough light cruisers to go around and construction of replacements was slow and consumed too many resources.
Seeing this tactical weakness, GaltNaH raised the question with the Klingon High Council. Many council members scoffed, stating that the ngeHbej class light cruisers were more than adequate for that duty, and that any war with the Federation would most likely be over very quickly anyway. For several hours, the Colonel attempted to argue his case but in the end the councils final decision was against the idea. GaltNaH began to protest but was curtly dismissed before his anger would cause him to slight the honor of any council members or its decisions.
Undaunted, the Colonel decided that if the High Council was too myopic to listen to reason then a demonstration would be required. Secretly, the Colonel programmed in a few modifications to the Bird of Prey simulation and created a variant of the ship which was available only to himself. Then, after the rest of the Klingo-Federation War scenario was input, he invited several council members and other dignitaries to try their hand at destroying the Federation. It soon became obvious that a lack of a true destroyer class vessel would cause any war with the Federation to soon turn into a race against light cruiser attrition. Afterwards, Colonel GaltNaH manned the simulator and accessed his destroyer concept. Within the simulator, the concept worked to perfection and fulfilled the dual purpose of destroyer duty and freeing up valuable war resources. The council members present immediately called for design and construction of the Colonels destroyer. The class of ship was dubbed "QuD" or "Insurrection" in homage to the Colonels guile in bringing about a change in the "final decision" of the council.
The first production ship of this class was launched late in 2286, and was commanded by Colonel GaltNaH himself. It served in many actions throughout the empire, amassing an impressive record of victories before she and her crew were lost in a particularly bloody skirmish along the Romulan border. There are currently only fifty of these vessels in service with another two-hundred on order.
